March 16 to 18 Siem Reap
Travelled by bus from Phnon Penh to Siem Reap. Along the way we stopped at a 1000 year old bridge!! Next stop was "Spider Village" Ian had a trantula on his shirt that didn't want to come off...Jenelle stayed by the bus. Once we arrived in Siem Reap we went to our first Angkor temple for the sunset. Beautiful! The following day was incredible but also very long and hot. We went to 5 Angkor temples including the massive Angkor Wat. It's incredible that a structure this large and with some much detail was built over 1000 years ago AND that we got to see and touch it!
The following day Ian, Phil and Chris went golfing which was a blast! They each had a cart to themselves and a caddies. The girls were very friendly and would do everything for you. They would tell you where to hit the ball and how far, suggest what club to use and if you missed by 10 to 15 yards they apologized for giving you the wrong club or advice.....we all told them it was the golfer not the advice that made us miss!!! LOL! They would also walk with you holding an umbrella over your head for shade, they even fixed our divots for us!! We took alot of funny photos with them and I think they had as much fun as we did. Something is definitley wrong with our courses in Canada!!!LOL!!
Then the guys picked up Jenelle at the hotel and headed to the shooting range. The tuk tuk ride was about 40 minutes, passing by a military base and down a long dirt road. The gun range had a wall of guns for the choosing and the men there were pretty sketchy looking. The rocket launcher was too expensive so the boys picked an M18. Things were going ok until another tourist showed up. The guy fired an automatic only hanging on to the gun with one hand. Faster than you can blink the barrel of the gun shot upwards while shots were firing. Jenelle's back was to the group but thank god that Ian was watching as he grabbed Jen and ran behind a cement wall. It was absolutely terrifying thinking that someone was going to get shot. Then the guy working there kept pushing the guys to shoot the M60 machine gun. Ian did then we got the hell out of there as some guy was walking down the road with a handgun! Never again!
In the evening we went to a dinner and show with traditional Cambodian dancers. This was our last night with the group as we decided to cut our time short by a couple of days and fly to Bali from Siem Reap instead of taking the 9 hour bus ride to Bangkok and leaving from there.
The 33 day Gecko tour was very well organized and we couldn't have travelled that fast on our own. Most of the people were really great to have around. Having said that, we will never book another tour like this again. hahaha! It was too long for us to be on an organized trip with a group. We are very excited to continue on our own again and have some R&R on the beach.
