Weezie and Biggie's big trip Eastbound travel blog

March 17, 2012 Happy St. Patrick’s Day WOW!! We have unexpected internet!!

Today was a travel day, from Austin to Lake Charles, La, and although it was only about 260 miles, it felt much longer. We are tired. The road surface was rough much of the day, there was a lot of traffic, especially crossing Houston, and there was some degree of wind. It made for long periods of tension. We arrived at our campsite in the Sam Houston Jones State Park around 5 pm. It is a very nice park, but the site is not all that flat, and we are once again feeling like we are listing to port, even though the bubble level (and the level bubble) say we are level. We did not bother messing with the leveling jacks at the last 2 places, and while the refrigerator may not have been perfectly level, we felt good.

The one nice part of our drive today was the wildflowers. We saw tons of Texas Blue Bonnets (in the Lupine family), as well as lots of yellow, coral, lavender, white, and some pink, some cherry, and some lavender flowers. In some places people had pulled off the highway to photograph their kids in the midst of the flowers.

Texas is one wide state—the final exit is something like mile 886. It would be 2 very long days in a car. I am glad to be done with Texas, although I must admit I really liked parts of it. So much history! N J has tons of history too, none of which I have bothered to check out except the reenactment of Washington crossing the Delaware (and that was once, about 4 years ago). I may actually go to our State Capitol building to see if there is a tour.

Tomorrow we will drive the Creole Scenic Wilderness Road, of something like that—a scenic road through several wildlife areas, with places you can get out and walk. Then we move on to New Orleans for 4 nights. Things seem to be speeding up as we get closer to home, and we are getting anxious to get home.
