Thursday 23rd February 2012 This morning was a bit of a run around packing everything up and getting snacks for the journey which has turned into crisps and water. Today was also the first signs of my mosquito bite allergic reaction on my face. A few red dots noticed on my chin but thought nothing of it. We got the bus at 11.00 and another opportunity to start talking to some of the group members. A couple of hours journey to the ferry station and an hour wait in the heat was quite intense but we just about managed it. The Ferry ride was one and half hours to the island of Ilha Grande. Very pretty island which reminded me a little of Thailand islands. By the time we got off the boat my face was a complete outbreak of red spots and looked pretty angry and was itchy, to resist the temptation of scratching was hard. We walked to the hostel and unpacked our bags, changed for dinner and went to a lovely restaurant where we had the best meal. Most meals are shared between 2 people, the portions are so big. Its crazy. I definitely miss the food back at home though, its all rice, beans, meat or chips here, I really just want some vegetables. After dinner we went to a hostel for a dance and couple of drinks. Was great fun and we got together as a group more.
Friday 24th February 2012 We woke early and had breakfast, today was a 4 hour walk to a beach Lopa Mendez. We met the group at 9am and after much overlapping of time we eventually headed out by 10.00am to find the weather getting incredibly hot, the type of heat you can not avoid. The walk was hard. Mostly up hill and quite rocky, I guess it is to prepare ourselves for the Inca trail. We crossed a few beaches before reaching our destination of a beautiful white sandy beach sweeping round for about 2 miles. The water was beautiful and clear but the current quite strong. We re energised with drinks and crisps and then chilled out for a while before playing bat and ball which I spent more time running back and forth up the beach to collect the ball. At least it kept me entertained as I cant sit still for too long and we had a nice breeze by the sea. My face was quite bad now so headed back to the hostel, we got a ferry boat back round as the thought of having to walk another 4 hours may have tipped me over the edge especially in the heat. We saw some monkeys on the path back which was cool. Anna came with me to the medical centre after a little while of hunting it down and asking people. Luckily the doctor spoke a small amount of English but to be honest it was pretty obvious what the concern was. I had a cortisone injection, 20 millilitres injected into my vein, once the nurse found it, did not feel it though which was good and plus I a pretty good with needles so all helps. Was quite sleepy after and the doctor said to rest for a couple of hours, any excuse for me so off I went for a nap. In the evening we had an all you can eat BBQ, which was so yummy. Salads and meat. I think we all had about 3 plates of food each. We went out after to another hostel for more dancing which was fun but very crowded and hot. About 2 am I retired to bed.
