After spending 4 nights beachside camping in Ventura, we had to move on. We loved being on the beach and watching the sunsets and listening to the sound of the waves. But all good things must come to an end, so we headed south and east, which meant we had to drive through the LA area. After spending 4 hours driving in heavy traffic, narrow lanes, through construction zones, trying to figure out how we stay on I-10 when there are a zillion choices on the overhead signs and none say I-10 - or worse yet show I-10 going in 2 directions - I told Ed I didn't care how out of the way it took us, we weren't going through the LA area again. He did a great job driving, but I was a basket case.
We spent the night at an Elks Lodge in Banning, California and were glad to be off the road. Our reservations at Twenty-Nine Palms started the next day at a Coast to Coast park we had never been to before. It was very nice and the people there were very friendly. They invited Ed to play with them at the golf course that was next door to the RV park. Ed said it was the worse golf course he had ever played on. they had painted the greens to cover up the fact that there was no live grass on them, mainly because the thousands of rabbits on the course ate what little grass there was. There was as many rabbit "pellets" all over the course as you would imagine thousands of rabbits would leave on a stretch of land they felt was their own private domain. They let the Bermuda grass go dormant but didn't overseed so it was very "desertee." Despite the fact the course was awful, the fellows were very nice and Ed had a good time. When they found out we were headed for Parker, they informed Ed that a group of them were also heading for Parker to play Emerald Canyon golf course and invited him to join them.
The ladies there also begged me to stay another day so I could attend a luncheon they were having. Even though we were suppose to leave, they arranged permission for us to stay until after 3:00 p.m. so I could got to what they told me would be a luncheon I'd never forget. I have to admit it was a luncheon like no other I have ever been to. The salads were fine, and then came the entertainment. Wow. They performed a skit that had to do with how a woman takes a shower and then how a man takes a shower. There was semi nudity involved and a lot of sexual inuendo. And a lot of laughing and hands over the mouth giggles. Let me just say I was the youngest person there so we're not talking beautiful, trim bodies. It was hysterical and a bit risque and it certainly was a luncheon I will never forget.
After leaving Twenty-Nine Palms we drove through one of the lonliest stretches of road we have been on. Through the desert and around a few mountains for 120 miles with nary a town in sight and only a few cars and trucks on the road besides us. You definitely want to make sure you have a full tank before you head out on that road. We arrived at one of our favorite Coast to Coast parks in Earp, California right on the Colorado River, before dark. We are actually across the river from Parker, AZ but no one ever knows where Earp, CA is so we always say Parker, AZ.
While we have been here, we have enjoyed wonderful warm, sunny weather. Ed played golf two days with the guys from Twenty-Nine Palms at Emerald Canyon GC, which is a beautiful golf course and one of the nicest we have ever played. So Ed played at the worse course and at one of the best courses, all within a couple of days. We tried our luck at the Casino in Parker - or I should say we made our donations. There are many RVs in the area, coming and going in every direction. The casino parking lot was packed with close to 50 RVs dry camping in their parking lot. The Walmart seems to be loaded with RVs every night too. A lot of them are headed for Quartzsite, as we are. A funny thing happened one day while we were crossing the main highway to go to the local grocery store. Traffic was heavy with lots of RVs going in every direction so Ed proceeded through the intersection fairly slowly and some guy waiting to turn left yelled through his open window as loudly and disgustedly as he could, "HURRY UP." We had our window down too and laughed ourselves silly over that comment. There are a lot of old people around here and now we know we are one of them.
We are leaving tomorrow headed for the desert in Quartzsite. We have been many times and love it. The big RV show will be starting this weekend and we have a shopping list ready of things to look for at the flea markets. We'll be dry camping, but can't wait to get back out in the desert. We'll let you know how it all works out.
