Bill and Lois Berhard

Bill in the Driver's seat

Up early again and on the road after a great breakfast of ham and eggs. Boy, can Janet ever cook. We encounter one downpour after another; needless to say the coach and the Jeep sure need it. The leak in the air conditioner over our bed is not a plus. Kansas City was exciting; Janet navigated and I steered in traffic and pouring rain. Shortly afterward we arrive in Topeka for lunch with our good friends, Bill and Lois Bernhard. What a wonderful break. We hadn't seen them in years.

We eat mostly in local restaurants as we travel. You get a chance to meet some of the local people and get the flavor of the community. (Pun intended.) We haven't stocked the fridge yet, and the stops are a good break form the driving. My legs don't take to long periods of sitting; they get real stiff. Even though it is easy driving, my shoulders still get a little sore. So, the breaks are welcome.

Pushed pretty far on the last tank of fuel, took 96 gallons to fill the tank. Only getting around 7.5 mpg. Wonder what it will be when we reach the mountains?

437 miles today. We are spending the night in a Kansas rest area. It is real nice and not too noisy, trucks on one side and trains on the other. It is somewhat like being serenaded to sleep. Rest areas in Kansas are patrolled, and therefore safe havens for travelers.
