Calvary Chapel Costa Rica Mission Trip 2012 travel blog

Skit Outreach Team: Parker, Kathie, Gary

This is the skit team's pre-trip plan for their VBS outreach station (1 of 4). The kids are split up into 4 groups based on age. The older kids will begin at the crafts station then everyone will rotate to the next station (crafts, games, story, skits). Each station will take about 20-30 minutes to complete, with the craft station driving the time.

We will be two days in La Carpio and 2 days in Los Guido running with Day 1 and Day 2 of the plan. The discipleship team is a large part of the plan as they are familiar with the children and speak the language and will be key in conveying the daily lessons.

The third day is our day to run the Kid's Day at La Finca. We are planning to have relay races and will be sharing the Day 3 story with the children.

Stay tuned for next week's posts while we are in Costa Rica for what changes God has made to this plan. After all, it's really his plan and not ours.

VBS Theme: The Wave of God's Love (Living Water)
VBS theme song chorus:
The words of our Father are flowing like water
So we oughta ride the waves of God's love

Day 1 - Hope through the storm

Story: Jesus Calms the Storm (Mark 4:35-41)
Key verse: Hebrews 12:28
Let us be thankful, and so worship God.
Seamos agradecidos. Inspirados por esta gratitud, adoremos a Díos.
Hebreos 12:28
God gives us hope! I can worship Him.

Day's Opener: Sin chair skit

Skit Team:

1. Read the day's verse

2. Foundation - Three pigs story

  • Joshua 1:9 This is my command--be strong and courageous! Do not be afraid or discouraged. For the LORD your God is with you wherever you go."

This lesson on temptation is taken from the original “Three Little Pigs” story but with a twist. Instead of blowing their houses down the Wolf tempts each little pig with candy or toys to get them to come out of their house. The first and second pigs fall into the temptation and come out to take the gift. The Wolf pulls his gift away and ties them up.

The third little pig resist the temptation but when the Wolf tells him that he will “eat his brother and sister for supper”, the third pig takes his Bible and starts praying to God for help. God answers his prayer and saves the brother and sister.

We can be thankful that he gives us strength against temptation.

  • 3 volunteers:

Kid 1 builds his house (straw) - After the first little pig builds their house the Bible will be placed outside, propped up against it.

Kid 2 build his house (sticks) - After the house was built the child uses their Bible to prop one edge of the crooked house up.

Kid 3 builds his house (brick/block) - We were able to set the Bible up on top of the foam blocks so it was easy to reach because this little pig reads his Bible everyday.

  • The bible 'props' encourage the children to be in the word (learning to read is important, school, etc).

  • Assume that the kid volunteers would be paired with leadership team to help them 'build' the house and succumb to the temptation. Parker will make a great wolf tempting and capturing the kids AND knocking down the weak houses (so that they are not damaged too bad for the next go round).

3. Being Thankful

  • What are you thankful for? (ex: Mom, Dad, house, friends, crazy gringos

  • Something that we are thankful for is Jesus dying on the cross for my sins

  • Sin Water experiment
  • Who has heard of the 10 commandments?List the 10 commandments
Who has ever broken one of the 10 commandments:
    • Lying
      Disobeying mom & dad
      Not keeping promises
      Cruel speech
      Lack of grace
Show them the glass and tell them that this is them (maybe put a face on the front)
Show them the bottle that is labeled sin
This is what it is like on the inside when you sin (drop some in the glass)
Because we have sin in our lives we need forgiveness
Tell them that Jesus, son of God, came to earth 2000 years ago and lived as a man and died to take on our sins.
(drop in the vinegar to make the water clear again)
Just like the water turned clear again, when you ask Jesus for forgiveness of your sins he will forgive you

  • 4. Worship

When we are thankful for something our natural response is to give thanks. When we do that to God it is called worship.

  • What are different ways that people worship?
    Sing
    Dance
    Pray
    Actions
    How we treat others

5. Memory verse game

  • 2 Older groups

Have children say each word and tape the word to the wall (or hang on the clothesline). Read the finished verse in unison a few times then invite a child to remove a word. Say the verse aloud again, filling in the missing word. Continue removing notes until all are gone.

  • 2 smaller kid groups

Choose a child to begin and have him or her say only the first word of the verse. The next child says the 2nd word. Continue around the circle. Next, have the children squat down and jump with their arms up as they say their word to make a 'wave''.

{or} Call on groups of children to say the verse together

Day 2 - Encouragement on Boat and Beach

Story: Paul Shipwrecks on the beach (Acts 27-28:10)
Key verse: Ephesians 6:10
Be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power.
Fortalézcanse con el gran poder del Señor. Efesios 5:3
God never leaves me. I can encourage others.

Day's Opener: Cargas skit
We have a piece of luggage labeled cargas. People come up and try and pick up the bag move the bag and it can't. After all of the tries they are all confused and don't know what to do. Jesus walks up and picks up the Cargas and walks off. The people are amazed and follow him.

Skit Team:

1. Follow up on Jesus being foundation from previous day

Clay pot

What are things that you hold most dear?
Family
Money
Toys

Metal pipe represents Jesus

Stick/Hammer represents trouble/horrible event

Clay pot does not stand up to those things, but God does

2. Memory verse from previous day

  • Prize for person remembering verse?

3. Read Day 2 verse

4. Balloon with flame

  • Two people with joy that look the same but there is a key difference: one has the Lord as their foundation, the other does not

  • The flame represents trouble/hardship similar to what Paul ran into when he was ship wrecked in today’s story. People can react differently when they run into trouble.

  • Here is a person who does not have the Lord as their foundation. (Hold balloon without water over flame) When they run into trouble sometimes they will panic or can deal with the pressure.

  • When people around you are facing trouble are they typically joyful? Si or No? They lose their joy like the balloon lost its joy.

  • Here is a person who does have the Lord as their foundation. (Hold balloon with water over the flame). As you can see, with Jesus as your foundation, when you run into trouble you won’t lose your joy. The trouble doesn’t necessarily go away, the flame still hits you and it can be difficult for you but with Jesus as your foundation you have a hope that is more eternal.

5. God's Armor

Bring in some silly items that the children can wear for the different pieces of the armor. Here are some ideas:

Kid1 - Helmet of Salvation: A silly hat

Kid2 - Breast Plate of Righteousness: A vest turned around (buttons in the back) with a cross tapped on

Kid3 - Shield of Faith: A pillow in a sham (so they can put their hands into it)

Kid4 - Belt of Truth: An old belt

Kid5 - Shoes of Peace: Large shoes or slippers

Kid6 - Sword of the Spirit: A large roll from wrapping paper and a paper towel roll that is cut and glued to make a sword

Discussion Questions:

  • Why do we need spiritual armor? (To stand against the wiles of the devil.)

  • What is it we fight against? (against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.)

  • Should we be afraid of this battle? (No, God will help us stand against evil. The powers of darkness will be defeated by God.)

  • How does God help us in the battle against evil? (He gives us the weapons and armor we need to stand strong.)

  • Why is it important that we that we put on our spiritual armor every day? (Without it we will be weak and easily defeated.)

  • How can we use each piece of spiritual armor at home? At school? At church?

Kids Day, Day 3 - Following through Water and Sand

Jesus Cooks for His Disciples on the Beach (John 21:1-19)
Key verse: Colossians 3:17
Whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus.
Y todo lo que hagan, de palabra o de obra, háganlo en el nombre del Señor Jesus. Colosenses 3:13
God gives us a job to do! I can follow Him.

Bible verse memory game ideas:

Before each game, repeat the memory verse several times with the group.
Print each word of the verse in bold letters on separate sheets of paper (cardboard).

Either: (a) tape words to a wall, or (b) hang on a clothesline, or (c) have volunteers hold the words

The clothesline doesn't need to be permanently attached. You can use volunteers, or adult leaders/coaches to hold up the line during the game.

  • Catch the Memory Verse Game: Having all students sit in a circle, pass the ball to clockwise. As each child passes the ball they say one word of the memory verse. Continue passing the ball until the children have memorized the verse. Another version would be to roll the ball across the circle to another child.
(this would work for any age group)

  • Have kids recite the verse to a puppet. Have the puppet repeat back the verse. Occasionally have the puppet repeat it incorrectly to have the student correct him.
(younger kids, but possibly older as well?)

  • Have children say each word and tape the word to the wall (or hang on the clothesline). Read the finished verse in unison a few times then invite a child to remove a word. Say the verse aloud again, filling in the missing word. Continue removing notes until all are gone.
    (older kids)

  • Choose a child to begin and have him or her say only the first word of the verse. The next child says the 2nd word. Continue around the circle. Next, have the children squat down and jump with their arms up as they say their word to make a 'wave''.
    (variation of #1 game)

  • Place all of the papers face down on the floor in random order directly below the clothesline. It is also your choice if you want the clothespins to be attached to the line in advance, or if you want them to be removed after each round.
    (older kids)

  • Arrange the team
Have some kids hold the cards and have the audience help to arrange them correctly.

  • Pass a Bible around the room while singing a song. When the song stops, the person with the Bible says the verse.

  • Call on groups of children to say the verse together. (e.g. everyone who has blue eyes, everyone who had cereal for breakfast, everyone who has a sister.
