Dec. 17th: Departed KK at 10:30am on a bound bus for Suka. Bus ride turned out to be a bit rough for me as two of the passengers seated behind us began throwing up. Anyone who knows me knows that I am a sympathetic vomitor, if I see it/smell it or hear it I'm pretty much done for the day. It was really hard for me not to join in but SUCCESS - I manage to survive.
Arrived at the Suka junction drop-off point a little just before 5pm. Two vehicles just "happened" to be parked waiting for new arrivals to take into the town of Suka. We jumped into two separate vehicles at a cost of $21 ringgit per person. We met a gentleman on the bus from England, Ian who joined in our group and we all headed to a new backpackers lodge that just opened up 3 months ago.
Ride didn't take as long as stated, 40 minutes was the original ETA time but we arrived within 17 minutes. Took a look at the lodge and decided to take a room for 4 with Delphine and Nick at a cost of $95 ringgit per night. It's very nice compared to the places we have stayed recently. The grounds are very well groomed and there are free range deer (momma and baby) wondering around. Sounds of the jungle and wild life can be heard all around you and as the night was setting in the jungle became more alive than ever.
We settled into our room and went to eat our supper in the main dinning area. (deck outside) Supper is not included in the price and we were a little upset that they had a set price of $15 ringgit per person with a set menu so you didn't even get to chose what you wanted to eat. However once the meals arrived we were pleasantly surprised. We started with a soup, onto our main dishes of locally caught fish, veggies and rice and ended with a dessert platter of local fresh fruit. All the tea and coffee you could drink.
We discussed our plans for the next day and called it a night just before midnight.
Dec. 18th: Woke up and had a nice breakfast of eggs, sausage, toast and coffee. (included in our accommodation price) We walked to the river and took a tour of a nearby resort. we decided to take a river cruise and go on a tour hour boat ride through the jungle looking for monkeys, birds and wild life.
Soon enough we spotted Proboscis Monkeys, Macaque Monkeys and a huge family of wild bearded boars along side the river bank. We also saw a very large monitor lizard about 6 feet in length just hanging out on a tree limb above the rivers water. There were plenty of times that we spotted Proboscis monkeys, we even had the rare chance to catch a glimpse of a young baby proboscis. We also discovered a large male sitting high in a tree above the river who apparently doesn't need Viagra! Our boat guide said they don't need anything, they are always at 12 o'clock. Jason grabbed plenty of photos of this guy - we posted a pic for you to enjoy at your leisure.
After our boat cruise we went back to our jungle resort, had supper and headed out for a walk with Ian (Englishmen we met on the bus ride here) back to his accommodations within the small outskirts of the town. We donned on our head lamps and away we went. We didn't discover much for wildlife, we saw a few spiders and some stray cats but that was pretty much it. It took us about an hour and a half there and back. Ian tried coax us to come in for a tea or coffee but we are leaving tomorrow and want to try and get some rest before our long bus journey to Semporna.
