It was quite a cool start to our first day in Melbourne in spite of the sunshine as there was quite a chilly wind. Terry took the car back into town with the help of Andy by 10am and Katie and I went for a swim in their local 50m outdoor pool.It was a very long length after all the swimming pools I had been using recently but was lovely.

After lunch we did a fabulous 25km cycle into the city centre via Gardiner’s Creek trail. It was through parkland most of the way crisscrossing back and forth across the little creek which got larger and larger until it joined the large river Yarra which is the river flowing through Melbourne. The city centre reminded us a little of Singapore crossed with the Thames embankment in London.

Andy had got a new mountain bike for Xams from Katie and so would not part with it whilst we went round Melbourne even when we walked round the parks etc He enjoyed experimenting trying to cycle up steps and over bumps etc!

After a wander around the botanical gardens we had a meal out and went up the Eureka tower – the tallest in the southern hemisphere (to level 88) for a view over Melbourne as the sun was setting. It was quite impressive and gave us a good idea of what else there was to see in Melbourne such as the grand prix circuit as well a view of the Rod Laver tennis stadium where we will be going to see the Melbourne Open at the end of January.

By the time we had caught the train home with the bikes (a 45min ride) and walked back from the station (my bike had got a flat tyre in the last km before the centre of Melbourne!) it was 11pm.
