From Rob & Bessie Welder Park – Sinton, TX

Have you ever wanted to go back in time to places and memories that played a big part in shaping your life as you know it? Well today we decided to do just that and visit three area cities/towns that were a big part of our individual lives and the beginning of our lives together.

We found ourselves in the towns that we both moved to at the ages of 12 and both of us in the 7th grade. My new town was Robstown in 1959 and Rudy’s new town was Mathis in January 1957. Today we searched out the houses we each lived in during our “formative teenage years” and also drove by the Jr. High and High Schools we each attended………………….Rudy having been a Mathis Pirate and I a Robstown (Jr. High) Boll Weevil and then graduating to a Robstown Cottonpicker in High School; now you will have to admit those two Robstown school mascots would be hard to find elsewhere!

In each of the towns we drove down their “Main Streets” and had different reactions to today’s findings………Robstown very disappointing and devastating while Mathis showed signs of new growth and rebuilding! Even our old homes that were built in 1959 and 1960 showed the same kind of condition that we saw in the towns………..Rudy’s home in Mathis looked like it had received a lot more TLC than mine in Robstown.

This was true of the cities themselves...……..everywhere in Robstown streets, buildings and homes were very run down and poorly maintained, even the church where we were married in 1966 was in need of that TLC mentioned earlier. We both commented that my old stomping grounds looked like we had crossed the Rio Grande River and were in the slums of Old Mexico. Whereas Mathis had the older homes, churches and businesses but they showed pride of ownership and even several new business enterprises have sprung up.

Now we also drove over to Corpus Christi as this was where “the action” was during the early 60s even being a place we lived for a short time early in our “Mr. & Mrs.” years. Today we drove down Shoreline Drive as well as Ocean Drive a stretch of road that we both have driven hundreds of times. This city is where we each attended concerts, went to the “malls” when “malls” were something new to the shopping enterprise and also for dates Corpus is where you went for a great seafood dinner and then a movie or maybe just “cruised” the local drive-in diner several times. All in all this city played a big part in our lives and it was nice to just drive, look, enjoy and reminisce about those bygone years!

We had to use a whole lot of imagination at times to conjure up the memories of our lives from the late 50s to 1966 in these towns we revisited today but that is why “trips down memory lane” are taken and like ours ENJOYED!

Till Later…………………………
