Koh Phangan Day 2

Today was the day that Ross and I decided to try our luck with renting a scooter to get around the island.

Most travel books will state that renting a motorbike can be risky for several reasons. Apparently it is very common to have tourists injured while navigating the windy roads that there are special ambulances that drive them all day long looking to help out. It is also common to be ripped off from renting the bikes. It is only 200 Baht for a day, and you pay for your own gas. I was smart and took several pictures of the bike after inspecting it to point out any dings that he might say I caused. I also told him that I was a lawyer.

Once I drove back to our hotel to pick up Ross we got our bags packed for a little island adventure. First we drove along the coast south to the main port of the city where we sat at a chill beach side restaurant and had refreshing smoothies and waded in the water for a bit. The restaurant was owned by a French man and his Thai wife. Apparently Thai women are the ideal wives. He was very helpful in giving us tips on where and what to see on the island.

Following our light swim we went to a little food court where we were able to make our own Thai noodle dishes. It was dirt cheap and amazingly delicious. After lunch we stopped off at a roadside beach with mangroves and seashells galore. We explored the shallow wonders that the location had to offer us and we took in some much needed sunny time. We went back to our hotel and swam in our private cove and had a margarita by the pool. It was such an awesome day and by 4pm we were pooped.

For dinner we took our bike on one last spin and had an amazing dinner in a mountain top restaurant where there were only 3 other people. In comparison to Koh Samui this place was empty and way chill. Both Ross and I enjoyed the relaxed feel of this place and today was my favorite day of our trip thus far. Speeding through windy mountain roads, over sea cliffs and having Ross sitting on the back of the bike was quite the feeling. I could easily walk away from it all and call this place home.

I have said it before but I love Thailand!!
