Arch into Quadrangle

When I wrote about our visit to Chichen Itza, I said that it was the best Mayan site that I had seen up to that time. Today we went to visit Uxmal. This is another great Mayan city. I am not sure which is better. Chichen Itza has a nicer pyramid and a huge football stadium but Uxmal has more large buildings with more ornate carvings everywhere. It has a large quadrangle with long buildings on all four sides, each covered in ornamental designs. There are two pyramids. There is a huge building that was for the royalty of the city and for the city government. Many people think that Uxmal is the nicer of the two sites. I think I do like Uxmal better.

Uxmal was a city of 20,000 people around the year 900. But it began to depopulate because of a series of draughts and was eventually abandoned.

There are few tourists at Uxmal. The tourists number a couple of hundred compared to the tens of thousands that are swarming all over Chichen Itza. The reason for this is that Chichen Itza is within a day’s drive of Cancun. People can take a bus tour and get back to their all-inclusive hotels in time for supper. Uxmal is too far away for that. It would involve and overnight trip.
