We’ll be upfront about this – our experience of Goa basically consisted of five straight days on a gorgeous beach and we bloody loved it. We may not have seen the ‘real’ Goa but after five months of landlocked travel we liked what we did see.
Our chosen patch of sand was a small beach in the south called Patnem (south of the more built-up Agonda). A bay stretching about 2km along the coast bordered by lush palm tree groves and populated with no more than a dozen small beach hut businesses; it was bliss. We were visiting in the lull just before the height of the season around Christmas, so it was still relatively quiet.
The sea was perfect for swimming with just the right amount of wave, the sunsets were dramatic yet serene and the fresh fish and seafood were delicious. We at least attempted to taste the real Goa.
