79km to go

Today we headed to France for a short visit to the southern region taking in Toulouse and Bordeaux. Toulouse is just a short stop over to break up the journey. We checked in to our beautiful hotel, went for a short walk to stretch the legs and then looked for a place for dinner. We found a cute little French Bistro called La Preference. The bistro had a theme which we were to find out was a common thread throughout all of Toulouse - the Violet. We started with the Violet Aperitif, then progressed to the edible Violet on the entree and on each subsequent course. The decor was Violet, the staff wore Violet and you were instructed to eat your Violet - I think the waitress's name was even Violet. The Toulouse soccer team colours are white and.............. you guessed it VIOLET. Back at the Hotel we went for a nightcap and met 4 British Gents in the bar. Turns out these guys were official Rugby Union referees, who were in town to officiate a Heineken Cup (rugby union's version of the Champions League) game between Munster of Ireland and Castres Olympique of France the next afternoon. The were having a great time laughing and joking until........ 5 guys in Munster jerseys walked in for a beer. Each of the Irish lads easily weighed 150kg. Well didn't the referees go deadly silent real quick. We started chatting to the Munster supporters and you could visibly notice the refs getting nervous thinking we were going to out them. We were very professional and didn't blow their cover - they even thanked us when the Irish left. They invited us to the rugby game the next day - so we went and had a great time. The score was 24-27 with Munster kicking a drop goal after regulation time had expired to win the game.

Next........ Off to Bordeaux.
