Nov 7 Chivay

Left Arequipa in the morning to go to a small town called Chivay in the valley of the Andes mountains within the ring of fire which is an area full of volcanoes. On the way there we stopped at the highest point along the highway which was 4900 meters above sea level. While there we build a rock monument as a gift to the volcano gods and made a wish for safe travels. We had our first hole in the ground experience (see pictures). Along the drive we saw wild vicunas, think of small and skinny, short haired llamas. We also saw alpacas which have a shorter rounder face and are fluffy like a sheep. There's also a different kind of alpaca that has long dread lock hair like (as our guide said) Bob Marley. There were also many wild llamas.

We arrived in Chivay which is a small farming town with over 4200 different kinds of potatoes!! G&G Lewis would love that :) Chivay is a beautiful town surrounded by big mountains and volcanoes. After checking into our hotel we went to the hot springs where the water is heated underground by lava from the surrounding volcanoes!! It was so nice to relax. The water comes out of the ground at 89c then is cooled through a series of water channels so when the water goes into the pool it is 40c. It's a lot colder here at night, about 8c, and makes Ian want to cuddle with a cute alpaca named Candy. Ian bottle feed her earlier in the day and has a little crush on her. We didn't realize that it would be so cold here and Jen only brought tank tops. So she's wearing both of them under her coat. But we're heading back to Arequipa tomorrow were the weather is warmer.
