Jude and Pete - Greek Sailing Adventure & Absolute Turkey 2011 travel blog

It's a beautiful morning in this sheltered harbour...the water is calm, it is still cloudy however I am sitting out in shorts and t-shirt writing the first part of today's journal. We had a really big storm during the night (recurring theme here)....thunder and lightning and rain and more rain.....and more rain. I was in the middle of the boat and Pete was on one side...he had to move a bit during the night as rain was coming under the plastic curtains that were drawn to keep the rain out. There was one huge clap of thunder just above the boat during the night...sounds like it woke most of us.

We hung our swimming things and various other bits of clothing around the boat last night to dry off...guess what, this morning they are wetter than they were before we hung them. The rain found its way inside the plastic curtains. Wenda had hung her umbrella and it filled with water.

We are waiting for breakfast to be served...it will be interesting to see what they come up with today. Serdar and Ilcare, our driver are catching fish from the stern of the boat...they are tiddlers and when I said something about them, I was told they were breakfast....not for us though. I saw Serdar eating some last night. We had a lovely breakfast...much the same as the hotels...fresh tomato, cucumber, fetta cheese, boiled eggs, olives, bread and the usual accompaniments. The location was what made it special...sitting on a boat near the shore of the Mediterranean and a lovely, calm morning.

This all had to come to an end and it was time to up anchor and set off for land again. The region we are in is called Kekova but it wouldn't come up on the travel journey map. Back to the bus and off again. The weather forecast is for more rain so not sure how the day will pan out.

We stopped at another ancient city called Myra, the capital of Lycia (when it was in existence), another really interesting site...I know I keep saying that. There's heaps of rock cut tombs and another amphitheatre. A lot of the ancient city is now covered by alluvial soil from the Demre Cay river and the area surrounding the site is covered by greenhouses. Turkey grows crops such as tomatoes and cucumbers all year round in this area.

Back to the bus and off to lunch before we head to Kas, our overnight stop. We had lunch at a seaside restaurant, a stop where we would have swum if the weather had been better. The sea was wild and it was very windy so a quick walk was all we managed after lunch. A couple of the guys went to put their toes in to check the temperature of the water and managed to get quite wet by unexpected waves. A few more wet clothes to try and sort out later today.

Before we got to Kas, Serdar wanted to take us to the amphitheatre just outside Kas, a Hellenistic structure. We know the difference between a Greek and Roman amphitheatre now...the Greeks is shaped like a horseshoe and faces the sea (the Greeks relied on the sea breeze to project their words) and the Roman is a half circle and has a backdrop (not sure of the correct word and can be either man-made or natural) that the sounds bounces off back into the theatre. The Kas amphitheatre has been restored and is used for events.

Off to Kas and the hotel. We were already pretty happy to see our rooms as we have wet clothes and bits and pieces from last night. A number of us intend getting some laundry done as nothing is going to dry today unless you have a dryer. I went for a walk around town with the intension of doing a bit of souvenir shopping...down came the rain and I mean heavy rain so I sat in a cafe, had a coffee and chatted to an English lady who was waiting for her boyfriend until it eased off a bit (at least half an hour). Off again and I had to be really careful as I'd made the mistake of wearing my thongs and the pavement is really slippery. They put marble and tiles everywhere and it's deadly. I finished up walking with my thongs in hand. Bought a few things but decided to call it quits when the rain kept pouring down.
