and the 'giant termite'

Sunday Afternoon 9th October 2011 Weather:-Perfect

“We are not walking to Vernazza” kept ringing in my ears after we left Mr Poggi so the next best thing was to go by train, it is not far as you can see on the photos—only a two and a half hours walking and climbing along a goat track but as it takes you up hills and down dales and as we now know the difficulty involved we (he) have chickened out so on the train we went. Packed to the rafters the little village felt, as all the passengers disgorged down the staircase that leads from the station platform to the street below and as Vernazza is a lot smaller than Monterosso people seemed to be packed in a lot tighter; especially around the station area but as we moved a little further out things got back to normal. We had noticed yesterday when in Monterosso that there are a lot less people around now then when we were here last time but then we were earlier in the season and at night time the place almost looks deserted, we are wondering “are these people only day ‘trippers’ if so how unfortunate (for them) is that”?

The tower on the south head of the little harbour was our objective today. Last time we were here we were too buggered to go up there to investigate as we had just finished the Monterosso to Vernazza leg of the Chinque-Terre trail but to get up there it still necessitated climbing up stairs, more stairs and then some more but it was worthwhile for the views we received as payment were fantastic. Take note on the photos of all the terraced market gardens that have been dug out and dry walled over the centuries and worked by the local population, lots of grape vines, olive trees and lemon trees apart from everyday vegetables and tomatoes so as far as we can see these people are very self sufficient. I am sure that not far away there will be goats and cows as well (for milk and cheese and meat).

Before long it was time for sustenance so in the little street leading back to the station we enjoyed one of the best pizzas we have ever eaten. It was a very simple affair of a crispy crust with peperoni topping but it must have been the quality of the ingredients and the heat of the pizza oven because it tasted superb and with some wine and beer included the bill totalled to Au$19. We have noticed that restaurant/bar prices are a lot less here than on Capri and some other places that we have been to. We got caught while visiting Capri, we were getting tired so we sat down in a simple little bar and for once we did not check the price list first and for a medium (tap) beer and a glass of house white wine we also paid nineteen dollars and to top it off—no nibbles were included as is ‘per usual’ in this part of the world.

After lunch we explored Vernazza a little more but unfortunately snap happy Judy forgot her job so the only photo of that is—as Herman labels it “a giant termite in a tree” so “that’s all folks, more tomorrow---thanks for listening”.
