Monday, October 03, 2011 - Mohegan Sun Casino, Uncasville, CT
We left the Newport, RI area about noon Monday and drove an hour and a half to the Mohegan Sun Casino Resort in Uncasville, CT. We plan to stay here for about four days; we'll be boondocking (dry camping on their parking lot ... no electricity or water ... depending on our own generator and water supply which should be fine. We've done very little of this kind of camping). We'll need a permit to stay here and that's all that's required. I found the permit form online and have it all filled out to give to the security person when we arrive.
We arrived about 2:00 p.m., secured our permit and visited with the security person, got the rig all settled and feel comfortable in our new home. We have beautiful views outside our motorhome; much better than the last place we paid for! They even provide a shuttle bus that will take us to the casino; imagine that!
After we settled in, Tommy and I caught the shuttle over to the casino to check it out. We were here in October 2001, but it's expanded quite a bit since then. This is the most unique Indian casino we've ever seen: there's Casino of the Earth, Casino of the Wind and Casino of the Sky.
The native American decor is incredible, the artwork, everything begs to be touched. The wallcoverings resemble birch tree bark; see attached photos. It's truly amazing! There's life-size animated wolves on top of simulated mountains that howl whenever anyone hit a jackpot and they move frequently like they're watching you. We've never seen anything like this!
Tuesday, October 04, 2011 - We've been on the road for three weeks now and I've done laundry only once, so today we have to do chores, laundry, grocery and auto supply. Tommy dropped me off at the laundromat to do laundry while he ran his errands; yeah, right! Oh, well, he brought me a Butterfinger candy bar when he came back, so all's well. lol Laundry's done, so we're good for another ten days.
We stopped at the grocery to pick up a few items and were stunned at the prices! A 12 oz. can of Rotele Tomatoes that we pay 89 cents for at home was $2.29 and a one pound box of Velvetta was $4.69; I almost had a stroke!!! A case of water was $7.00; no, we didn't buy it!!! These people are crazy! We had better enjoy this recipe of Queso!
Our friends, Carolyn and Skipper flew into Providence, RI this afternoon (Tuesday) at 5:30 p.m. to spend the week visiting with us and doing some gambling, so we drove over to pick them up at the airport; they have a room reserved at the Mohegan Sun Hotel for a few days. It was good to see some friendly faces! Hopefully Lady Luck will smile on us!
Wednesday morning we had breakfast at the Tuscany Restaurant a few feet away from the enormous waterfall (thank goodness) so we could at least have a converation between us. The noise from the waterfall was loud! It was great to have friends to visit with and the food was delicious! We ate a hearty breakfast and then took a scenic drive up Route 169 to the Massachutes state line. We stopped along the way at a roadside market and I bought some fresh apples and Skipper and Carolyn bought some jelly and hot sauce.
Our drive wasn't complete without at least one stop at a pub called The Pumphouse; the guys just couldn't resist stopping at a least one bar! And then it was back to the casino and a search for Lady Luck. As you can see from the photos, this casino is absolutely beautiful.
Take care, stay in touch ... Cheers!
