We moved to the small town of Crescent yesterday, coming from Florence. All 163 miles was through forest. We started at sea level and ended up going to 5,000’ and then back down to 4455’. It was a pleasant drive with the trees thinning as we got away from the coast. The campground we wanted to stay in was full so we went to the other one in town. It was a small campground with about a fourth of the spots taken by long term campers. We are right in town along the main drag. Crater Lake is about 55 miles away and we are headed there after 2 days here. We worked on the journal after we got set up. It is supposed to get down into the 40’s tonigh, so we will have to snuggle.
It was 43 this morning and we had the furnace running. Our fireplace won’t quite keep up. I finished working on the journal and it’s Carolyn’s turn to proof it and download the pictures. I told her I would get groceries while she was doing that. There is a little store in town, more like a Circle K, so I drove the 16 miles to La Pine. It is a little town of 1500 people, but they have a Taco Bell. It is deer season and the road and grocery store is crawling with hunters.
After groceries, it was home to unload groceries, replace a running bulb on the truck, fill the washer reservoir and look for our next campsite by Crater Lake. The private one we wanted to stay in is closed for the season. As we are looking for a place and checking the weather, we are also looking ahead and seeing where we want to go and the miles we need to travel to get there. Change of plans. We decide it is too far to Yellowstone and then on to Colorado. Also the weather in Yellowstone in getting down towards freezing at night and only in the 40-50 range during the day. So we decide to wimp out and head south to California, going through Lake Tahoe and down to Yosemite and Mammoth Lakes. Then across to Arizona.
It is nice to be able to change plans like that and we may change again as the weather is going to be a factor in where we go. We will see how it plays out.
