Ron & Elena's 2011 Travels travel blog

(Ron Writing) This morning we stopped by the Hastings Museum to see the Kool-Aid exhibits. Edwin Perkins invented Kool Aid right here in Hastings back in 1927. Unfortunately the museum is renovating the Kool Aid exhibits so that gallery of the museum is closed until August 2012. We’ll have to see that some other time.

It was still very windy but not quite as bad as the past couple days so we decided to head on down the road. The rig handles just fine in the wind but when we drive directly into the wind, as we were today, it sure kills the gas mileage.

We drove south on US-281 to Red Cloud, NE. We stopped there for a walk around town and then had our lunch there. We had considered spending the night here but the campground isn't up to our standards and the town itself is looking very “tired”. The Main Street has many old buildings dating back to the late 1800’s that are still in use. But only a couple of them have been restored and the rest look pretty dilapidated. So we continued south on US-281 to Kansas.

Just south of Lebanon, KS we took US-36 west to Phillipsburg, KS. This is the area where my parents were born and raised and spent their early married years. I still have some relatives living here and we hope to get together with some of them this weekend.

We’re staying at a very nice city park on the west edge of town. It has a small campground with nice grassy sites, 30A electric and water hookups for just $10/night. We stayed here three years ago and the rates were the same back then.

Weather: Overnight low was 68°, today it was sunny with temperature in the low 80’s.

Mileage: Today - 111 miles, cumulative since leaving AZ on 4-6-11 – 13,516 miles.

Gasoline Price: $3.249 in Hastings, NE

Tonight’s stop: The Phillipsburg, KS City Park Campground, 39.75477, -99.33548, 1,932.
