A covered bridge in the Amish Country

Amish country

We opened the window blinds this morning to a strange yellow glow. After a short internet search we found out that the glow is called “sunlight” and we seem to vaguely remember seeing it weeks ago.

We put an Italian Pot Roast in the crockpot and hit the road just before 10:00. Today’s trip took us east through Gettysburg, York and Lancaster for about 2 hours to the Amish country in Lancaster County PA. We did stop in Gettysburg for a few minutes to take some pictures in the sunny weather before we got on Hwy 30 – The Lincoln Highway - for the relatively painless trip.

We had borrowed another audio tour from the campground about Lancaster County and while its directions weren’t great, it did have a lot of interesting facts about the area. For example, we thought the Amish country was occupied solely by the Amish, but it is made up of Amish, Mennonites and “normal” (for lack of a better term) people. There are also “Old” Amish and “New” Amish which has to do with how strictly they follow the Amish laws. Basically, the Amish are not allowed to have creature comforts like electricity, or technology items like TV or computers, but they can use generators to run saws when they build barns and they can use a telephone, but they cannot own one. If they work at a secular job (which is allowed), they have Social Security deducted from their checks, but they cannot collect it upon retirement. They accept no social services from outside the Amish community because of their desire to be almost totally self-sufficient. Their lives are very strange compared to ours, but it is neat to see them go about their normal day-to-day lives successfully.

The trip home was uneventful and we pulled into the campground just after 5:00 and were eating Pot Roast shortly after 6:00 – and it came out really good. That recipe is a keeper.

We have booked the next 3 nights at the Cherry Hill RV Park in College Park MD starting tomorrow so we can visit Washington DC for a few days. But, before we head that direction we are going to go back to downtown Gettysburg early to do at least part of a walking tour there to see the sights that we skipped yesterday because of the rain.

Note: I am adding a couple pics to yesterday’s update that I took this morning in better weather.
