16 Sept: Basque country. Set off for Spain mid-morning in the drizzle and low cloud which stayed with us all day. We got the odd glimpse of steep cliffs tumbling down to the sea, steep river valleys with towns at the estuaries and mountains behind – it must be spectacular when it’s clear. Sailed into Spanish waters at about 12:30 and raised Spanish and Basque flags, arriving in a little place called Getaria in the evening (26 nautical miles in 6 hours 45 minutes).

It was still raining in the morning, so we had a quick look at the town which is on a steep hill – even the floor of the church slopes up towards the altar! The shop keepers spoke Basque as their first language, but also Spanish, so Jane tried out her very rusty Spanish and seemed to be understood. We also learnt the Basque for ‘thank you’ which is ‘eskerrik asko’…
