This past Sunday, Allison and I took the metropolitan bus to Monachil, a country-side-like tourist city up in the Sierra Nevada. We took a hike on a trail called Los Cahorros. In at part of the pueblo, or town, of Monachil, you had a great view of the mountains.
I was in awe throughout the three and a half hour hike. Orchards, olive trees, rocky rivers, waterfalls, suspension bridges, orange and gold boulders across the mountains, rock climbers, caves, narrow edges to cross… It was so thrilling! There were lots o families and groups of friends hiking, too. Several brought their dogs with them. Most of the bigger ones had leashes, but all of the small terriers went without one. This is how it is in the city, too. I think it’s a European thing.
The first half was around the river and through caves. We stopped by a waterfall to eat our packed lunch on the rocks and dip our feet in the water. It was so cold that I started to have difficulty breathing.
Finally, we made it to the wide range of mountains and valleys! I couldn’t stop taking pictures of the miles and miles of orange and grey rock, and yellow and green vegetation against the wide-open blue sky. I had to force myself to put my camera away. I didn’t want it to take away from the experience. Every time we made it to a higher point in the mountains, I’d stop and stare, trying to take in the moment. I had never seen anything like it before. I could write about pages and pages how beautiful it was.
This week, my roommates and I have been stressing out a little trying to plan trips to other countries. Allison and I are going to Italy next Thursday, the 30th. We’ll mini-tour Rome, Florence, Pisa, and Venice, and fly home in the evening on October 5th. Our fall classes start the next day! I’m taking two mandatory language classes, History of Spain, and a class on Flamenco music. I’m still not sure what to take for my fifth class.
I’ve signed up for intramural volleyball, and a mountain biking excursion this upcoming Wednesday. I’m also planning to visit my friend Kerri Ann in Belfast, Northern Ireland on the 20th-24th. I want to see SO MANY places in both Europe and Spain, but I don’t have many free weekends. There are lots of included weekend excursions to other cities in Andalucía through my program.
Tomorrow I am going to see a bullfight here in Granada. Oh boy!
