Our campsite for the night at the Rustic Barn Campground in Kieler,...

After a restful night of sleep at the casino we headed south yesterday morning ready to see, once again, where the road would take us. Although gray and cold we have thoroughly enjoyed our travels of both yesterday and today.

Yesterday we drove through Red Wing, Minnesota (home of Red Wing Shoes and work boots), Lake City, Wabasha, and Winona. During our day we viewed various lock and dam stations and marveled at the engineering it took to design such an efficient system as is found on the Mississippi River. Wouldn’t it be fun to start at the top of the Mississippi River and ride it all the way down to New Orleans actually passing through those lock and dam stations? Well, we probably won’t ever do that, but driving the Great River Road south in our Roadtrek provides us with a small hint of what that would be like as we enjoy the river ports and wildlife found along the river!

We ended our day by crossing the river to park overnight in the La Crosse WalMart parking lot. We needed to restock supplies anyway so it worked out very nice for us.

Today we continued south on the Great River Road, crossing back over into Minnesota, and enjoyed another gray and chilly day of sights and wildlife. Speaking of wildlife… I really am beginning to think that the bald eagles don’t want me to take their picture. We see them, I excitedly get out my camera, and then they glide away from me before I can get the lens cap off and my camera powered up. Just like the moose in Maine hid from me; the bald eagles in Minnesota avoid my camera!

After enjoying another lovely day along the river’s edge driving through such towns as Lansing, Harpers Ferry, McGregor, Balltown and Sherrill we have crossed the river at Dubuque to spend the night at a very nice campground (the Rustic Barn Campground & RV Park) in Kieler, Wisconsin. We are surrounded by corn fields, there is a picturesque farm in the distance, and the owners have kept this campground up to very high standards. We are very pleased with our choice of accommodations for the night.

We plan on heading back into Dubuque in the morning to do some local exploring and then will continue our journey on the Great River Road. What a fun adventure we are having.

Happy Travels,

Rebecca
