Granita before the climb up the tower

Back to basics

Beautiful front door

The churches we have visited in Caserta and Trani have had some serious di baroquing. The glitz has been removed in the 19th and early 20th centuries to bring them back to their original condition, or as near as possible. It has certainly been a big change from what we saw in other countries.

In Trani, on the east coast we originally climbed the 250 stairs up the bell tower of the cathedral, which had its baroque cover removed in 1857. It is now very plain with a crypt underneath with some great frescos 500 years old. We have included a few of our favourites. The carving on the outside of the cathedral is also beautiful.
