Thursday, September 15 - Cannes, France

There is so much to see in this area and I really goofed as far as allotting time here. Really we should have spent a few days in Nice before departing for the US, but we chose to stop in London instead which meant we had to pack a lot into one day, so I arranged for a private guide to take us to all these fabulous areas. We asked Joanne and Jack Whigham from Chicago to come along with us as they had mentioned they wanted to see all the areas we had asked to see and Seabourn wasn’t offering anything that compared to what I had arranged. Our guide Fred from Dream Tours of Monaco met us at the dock at the port of Cannes.

We started in Cannes, home of the Cannes film festival, where the traffic was very heavy. We inched our way down the famous Boulevard Les Croisette which is the waterfront avenue lined with palm trees. La Croisette is known for picturesque beaches and for restaurants, cafés and boutiques. Then Fred took us up to La Suquet, the old town of Cannes, which provides a good view of La Croisette from above and is home to the fortified tower and Chapel of St Anne. After that we drove to Antibes where we saw the market, sat in a cafe overlooking the market. Then to the incredibly beautiful hill town of Saint-Paul-de-Vence where we had lunch at a Brasserie before entering the Medieval walls of the town. This town is one of the most beautiful I’ve seen and I have been to many Roman Medieval villages. I would definitely come back and stay here. There were many charming restaurants and good shopping. After Saint-Paul-de-Vence we were off to Nice and arrived just in time to catch the end of the famous flower market. On to the beautiful town of Eze where we had a drink at the famous Eze Hotel Chateau d’Eza. Up to La Turbie where we had a fabulous view of Monte Carlo and where my camera battery went dead so will wait for Jack to send me the photos of us in front of the Palace in Monte Carlo and in front of the famous casino.

It was a huge day - 10 hours of touring with our fabulous non-tiring guide Fred. When we arrived back at the dock, we dragged our way from the van back to the tendering dock and back to the welcoming arms of our cruise ship and it’s superb crew. Off to the Sky Bar for drinks with the gang, then off to the showers to prepare for our last dinner onboard. We arrived in the restaurant where we were motioned over by Peter to come join them. We had a very enjoyable last dinner with our new friends Peter and Diana and then off to the Sky Bar where it was the norm for the boys to drink cognac and smoke cigars, while Diana and ate politely sipped our fresh mint tea.
