Wednesday, September 14 - Saint Raphael, France

Another seaport town. They’re all starting to seem the same, however, Saint Raphael is a little larger than the last one. As with most of these Romanesque towns, there is an old city center and this is where we found an amazing gourmet shop selling all sorts flavored sallts and sugars as well as specialty vinegars and tapinades. I refrained from buying any however I did come close to buying the ages white wine vinegar for 35 euro. I was afraid it could break in mu luggage plus I’m sure I can buy it in the US anyway. We had a drink at one of the cute café/bars in the old town with Susan and Steve from Columbus, Ohio. Susan and I walked some of the streets that supposedly had good shopping, but we didn’t find the shopping to be all that great so we went back to the ship and had another outstanding lunch..

This evening we were invited to dine with Peter and Diana Champion from Wimbledon, UK. Oprah (cute story aka BB) had sent a bottle of Puilley Fume to our suite when we boarded the ship. We were waiting for an opportunity to uncork it and realized it would go quite well with lobster. Seabourn is known for their outstanding service and for example, we phoned room service and they came to get the bottle of wine, took it down to the restaurant where they chilled it and served it at dinner. As it turned out, this was Diana’s favorite wine - what luck!! Peter and Diana had made a special order dinner request from the chef this evening - Lobster Thermador, a dish I had never tasted before. It was quite good but very rich. The Champions had also ordered dessert of Crepes Suzette to be made tableside. They are so yummy. After dinner it was up to the Sky Bar so the boys could drink cognac and smoke cigars, while Diana and I drank fresh mint tea.
