Day #6, 9-14-11
Slept in late today. It must have been dark out or something. Couldn't believe the clock said 8:30! We had no cell or internet service so I couldn't book tonights accomodations till we got down the hill. Just posted yesterdays blog.
We had a light breakfast (Oatmeal and toast and coffee), cleaned up the coach and readied to hit the trail. We only had a 30 mile drive to reach Redding so it was a short jaunt down the hill. Matilda was much kinder today! We arrived at Costco only to find that this Costco didn't have a gas station. We went across the street to Walmart to get some supplies (more paper towels and glass cleaner).I think this was the worlds biggest Walmart. I'm not kidding, it was 1/4 mile wide inside. They sold everything but used cars.
Had a quick lunch in the parking lot and found the cheapest gass in town on the Internet. It was a "Safeway" market gas station and we got an additional 3 cents per gallon off with our Vons Card. I computed the gas milage from the last fill and expected the worst as we had mostly slow hill climbing mountain driving for the last 300 miles. I was flabbergasted to get 8.2mpg. I never expected that on flat land! Good news for a change!
We reviewed a few local RV parks and setteled for a Good Sam park about 10 miles out called Faundale RV park.I got a secluded spot for 2 nights so we can do some site seeing. It's very close to Shasta. We have driven 822 miles so far and were just around the corner.
Tomorrow, we will visit a local attraction called "Turtle Bay" on the Sacramento river and the following day we will do Shasta National Park before heading North.
Time to clear out the e-mails and make a couple of calls while I can.
More tomorrow.
