We got to Vilnius late afternoon and found our hostel - this time it was probably the nicest hostel room we had stayed in. Yay! We hadn't eaten since breakfast so we went trekking to find Old Town before heading back to the hostel for a siesta. That night we found a microbrewery that did beer tasting AND had amazing food making us both very happy :)
The next day we went on a walking tour around the city where we visited the Republic of Uzipiz - an alternative part of the city with their own constitution and a weird love of cats (cats are mentioned in their constitution...). After the tour we grabbed some lunch and walked up to Gediminas Tower. After our visit there we walked to the Museum of Genocide Victims/KGB museum. The museum was very confronting and we ran out of time to see everything. After our visit to the museum we trekked the few kilometres back to the hostel before heading out for a lateish dinner.
The 6th we decided to have a happier day after the tough museum visit the day before. We slept in before getting a bus to Trakai to visit the Trakai Island Castle. The island castle was like a fairytale - a tiny island with an over sized castle in the middle of a lake. The lake was full of people in paddle boats and young couples rowing out to the castle. We walked along the little boardwalk to the castle before exploring the tiny island for a few hours. The rest of the afternoon was spent on the bus back to Vilnius.
On the 7th we got a bus to Kaunas.
