Down the Road

We closed up ‘the Neighborhood’, loaded up the ‘Rocketeer’ and headed south to visit my friend David and his wife Lynn in Cottage Grove, Wi.

Cottage Grove is located right next to Madison and the UW, where both David and Lynn went to school. The campus there is considered one of the most scenic in the land.

After a 3 hour drive south, we met up with them at a park and ride spot north of their home. We hopped into their van and proceeded to Devils Lake State Park. The lake is set in the pines amongst huge quartzite boulders and cliffs. The lake is spring fed and has several areas with nice and clean sandy beaches. We hiked one of the trails around part of the lake. There are miles of trails here, but we kept it simple after our drive. It was good to stretch our legs.

To get to the lake we crossed a wide section of the Wisconsin River, (the very same stream where I caught my big fish) on a ferry. Taking the ferry saves many miles of travel to get to the state park. In the southern part of the state the river has become very broad and slow. It forms many large lakes that are surrounded by beautiful homes.

After our hike we followed Dave and Lynn to their home for an evening of steaks on the Barbie and many bottles of wine. Their home is really neat and has a very large backyard that has been left in mostly a wild state. The woods are a great mix of hardwoods and pines. David says that in the fall the mixed colors are great to behold.

He did an excellent job on the steaks and Lynn prepared a salad with a very tasty dressing and a great pasta dish. And we drank many bottles of wine.

It was a great day!
