|Here we are in wonderful Swan Hill….
Some distressing news is just to hand however regarding the staple diet of our group. I quote from the ABC:
Ouyen to pass the baton on vanilla slice event!!!!!!
On the 2 September this year, Ouyen will hold its last vanilla slice event. The Great Australian Vanilla Slice Triumph has been hosted by the North West Victorian town for 14 years, but now organisers want another community to take on the task.
The Great Australian Vanilla Slice Triumph arrived in Ouyen in 'an unusual way', says the Chair of Ouyen Inc., Mark Wilson.
"Mr Jeff Kennett, the former Premier of Victoria, announced it unexpectedly on radio one day - the next thing you know, we had an event running here in Ouyen."
Around 30,000 visitors have flocked to the small town of Ouyen (population approximately 1,600) for the vanilla slice event, hosted there each year since 1998.
Pastry lamination and icing shine are among the areas that judges take into consideration as they make their assessments on which custard pastry reigns supreme.
The competition is spilt into sections, allowing professionals, amateurs and students to all get involved.
Organisers estimate that around 2,000 entrants have joined the event since it started in Ouyen, but Mr Wilson said the committee didn't want to see the event, which has brought around 3 and a half million dollars to Ouyen, wane.
"We'd like to see the event grow...it's probably better that it occurs outside Ouyen, and works with other communities that have got the capacity to build it and grow it."
"It started with a bang, and this year we've decided we're going to finish with a bang."
The Ouyen committee will pass on a package of information to any towns within the municipality that show interest in taking on the event; if there is no interest expressed; Mr Wilson said they will offer the title to towns beyond the municipality.
Overall, Mr Wilson said that the close of the competition in Ouyen was not to be lamented.
"It's been a terrific injection for the community of Ouyen this whole event, we really enjoyed the ride - it's probably gone on a lot longer than expected, so to make a responsible decision to see the event finish on a high is the way we would rather go out."

So tomorrow we are going to do something, as yet undecided. I’m pushing for a gourmet experience but that is not in favour for some reason…
