Kite-boarding on the Columbia River

Today was a relaxing day. I figured out the next legs of our trip and will soon post on this Itinerary. Lots of new things to see. When we got out the door this afternoon we headed to Stevenson for the Bridge of the Gods Kite Fest kite-boarding competition about 10 miles away. The full competition starts tomorrow for amateurs, but today was the competition of previous champions and practice. We sat for a few hours watching the kite-boarders start and perform their tricks. Interesting to watch. The competitors were young (I guess about 8) all the way through a man I would guess was in his 50s. The kites are actually filled with air along the edge - I am guessing to keep it floating when it loses the wind. While we were there a tour paddle boat cruised by the kite-boarders. Today was free beer day so Jay enjoyed a free beer and then we headed to the kite-boarder beach near where we are staying in Home Valley. There Jay launched his blow up kayak for the first time. Our friend Ron gave the kayak to Jay and this was the first time in 80 days it has been warm enough and calm enough for Jay to try it out. He can now say he has kayaked on the Columbia River. Here is the link for the competition incase anyone is interested. http://www.botgkitefest.com/
