Steve and Katrina's Grand Tour travel blog

The train trip through the French countryside was beautiful then we had our first experience of Italy - the rail workers strike!!Instead of a leisurly train trip to Venice we had to jump on a bus, and by jump I mean fight all the other train travellers who wanted to get on only two direct buses to Milan to then hopefully get on a train to Venice! But we tried to remember that in Italy it 'always works out in the end.' The travel gods must have liked our attitude because instead of being stranded in a little place miles from anywhere for who knows how long we managed to not only get the most comfortable seats on the bus but also onto a direct 1st class train to Venice once we got to Milan.

It was when we got to Venice that our fun really began! As it turned out, despite lugging heavy suitcases around the canals of Venice on vaporettos (water taxis)and up and down the many bridges and navigating some very dodgy and narrow alley ways, we found out when we got there that the address that we had written down was for a hotel that we had cancelled and not the one we had booked -doh! It was then up to my (not)fluent Italian to ask if anyone one could tell us where Hotel Bel Sito and Bellino was. No one could help us - one water taxi guy said it would take us 50 days to get there (he could have meant 50 minutes - I said my Italian wasn't very good). We decided against 50 days on a gondola and back tracked. Once again the travel gods liked our style or do they just help the lost?? We walked right past Hotel Bel Sito - could it be? Yes it could! A nice shower later and Venice becomes the most relaxing city on earth :)
