The Cockle train was a fizzer despite the improvement in the weather. The service today was to be provided by a rail motor so we decided to keep our AU$24.50 and instead caught the tram out to Granite Island. Mr Gnome and I rode on the upper floor and in a word I’d describe the trip as brisk or invigorating, I guess it could have been raining. The line has been extended and now runs as far as the Kiosk/café/bistro (2 course lunch AU$9.50). I climbed up to the lookout and admired the view… Great steps. So after looking around we caught the 11.40 tram back to the mainland and retreated to shelter (yes the weather had turned foul) for luncheon. The passing loop at the end of the causeway has real Horse tram points without moving blades; the horse is trained to pull the car to the left so it just follows the horse. It would be interesting to be here during the summer when the crowds dictate tandem working with 2 cars linked and 2 horses. Contrary to popular belief the horse dosent seem to have to do much, the chains seemed to be slack for most of the trip apart from getting things moving and when “Carmen” got to within sighting the terminus she broke into a canter…
Afternoon consisted of a drive to Myponga via Yankalilla, one of the readers had an Aunty (I think) who lived at Yankalilla. Any way the trip was a waste of time as the Brewery (advertised as being open in the brochure) was closed so we just had to make do with the scenery. Views from the Bluff are spectacular if you can find a holdfast and are not swept away by the breeze.
I have to be up early in the morning as an antenna specialist is driving over from Port Elliot to fix the TV antenna, then we plan to drive to Goolwa and see if the Brewery there is open….
