Our morning view of the mountains under full sun.

Today's moose sighting.

110812 (Ron Writing) It was another beautiful day. Not a cloud in the sky early this morning and even though we got some high puffy clouds as the day progressed, it was sunny nearly all the time.

After breakfast we continued driving northeast on the Richardson HW to Tok, AK. It was a nice scenic drive with mountain views and many lakes and ponds alongside the road. The highlight of the drive was watching a moose we spotted having his lunch in a pond. He/she let us get a few photos before moving off into the woods.

Around noon we arrived in Tok and went right to the post office to pick up our mail. Then we spent much of the afternoon going through the mail and taking care of a few items that needed attention. Late this afternoon we got fuel and water, dumped the tanks and drove a few miles east of Tok to the south end of the Taylor Highway. We drove north on the Taylor Highway about half the way to Chicken, AK. It was dinner time and we found a very nice large lot by a BLM wayside to park and spend the night. Now at 9:30 PM there is virtually no traffic on the highway and it is perfectly quiet out here. Very peaceful. All the clouds went away again this evening and it’s still very bright out but we can definitely tell the days are getting shorter.

Weather: Overnight low was 47°, highs today in the high 60’s. Sunny all day with just a few beautiful high clouds.

Critters: Trumpeter swan, moose in roadside pond.

Mileage: Today - 119 miles, cumulative since leaving AZ on 4-6-11 – 8,871 miles.

Gasoline Price: $4.069/gal in Tok, AK

Tonight’s stop: We are spending the night at the Mount Fairplay Wayside, a BLM facility near milepost 35 on the Taylor Highway south of Chicken, AK, 63.70585, -142.26773, 3,369’.
