Friday

We finally finished the clean up of the cemetery! It was a day of mostly raking, trimming and setting the stones that were in the ground upright. It looks really good. They should be able to keep this up now. We borrowed a rake and pitch fork or 4 long prong, as it is known here, from the Township office. Once we got all the mounds of plants out of the way we could see what needed a few touch ups. We cut the alder stumps down and trimmed the labrador tea back a bit more. We then pulled up the stones that were lying in the ground and propped them up so the rain would run off and they wouldn't deteriorate as quickly. Hopefully the locals will do something a little more permanent. No sign of Cinderella, Shirley thinks she was in with the other Butt's, we can't find her, I think someone stole the stone as it had such a unique name on it.

We popped into Shirley's after we were done and let her know the cemetery had been all brushed and cleaned out. She had already heard through neighbours that there was some woman doing that, now she knew who it was. Shirley came up with her step daughter (Linda) & husband (Keith) and were waiting for his parents to arrive as they were coming up to stay with them also. She invited us in for awhile and we all had a good chat.

We had a light supper and when down to the festival site for the Kitchen party. Almost everyone in town must have been there. We didn't know anybody so we tried to find a spot to sit. We paid $7 each to get in which also put you in for the door prizes and Sweet Lunch. This consisted of jello in a cup, pie, cheese, Bologna, crackers lassie loafs, molasses, raisin, chocolate chip and bake apple. The music was a young fellow singing NFLD tunes on the guitar, banjo, accordian and squeeze box, he was pretty good. They also had some skits throughout the evening and the mummers made an appearance also. They screeched one fellow in from Ottawa. He was french so it made it a little more difficult. He had to put on a rain suitsuit, wear the flag, eat some NFLD steak (bologna) recite a NFLD saying, kiss the cod and drink some screech. It was pretty funny. They also drew tickets for the door prizes and I won a $10 gift certificate for Riff's shoe store. Of course there isn't one in Lumsden. It was over about 9:30 and we headed home, we didn't stay for the social at 10 or scavenger hunt at 11pm.

Saturday

We went for a drive to Cape Freels (5 km down the road) and took the walking trail down to the beach and the site of the true Random Passage. We even got to the cemetery they were buried in. Lots of dead Murre's (waterfowl) and a few dead seals in advanced stages of decomposition along the beach. One big seal's head had been bashed in and was too stinky for me to want the jaws. We found lots of skate egg casings, and Dave started collecting lobster trap floats as there were several traps that had been lost and washed to shore. Some were in pretty good shape. We headed back as we must have gone (as the sign said) over 10 km and wanted to go to the festival in the afternoon. We got back to the truck and we had a good phone signal so I called Mum & Dad.

When we got back we headed down to the festival where we saw Shirley, Keith and Linda and hung out with them for a while. We had some Fish & Brewis for lunch (salt cod & hard tack with scrunchings) It was good, I'd eat it again. Met up with Rex agian and chatted a while. We watched the games and draws but none of us won anything today. Shirley was freezing so she went and sat in the car for a while. I had my t-shirt, fleece vest, sweat shirt and coat on and I was fine, not hot, fine. The wind was howling and it was overcast and about 11 C. They had a kids show where some of the girls had dressed up as celebrities and the Cat in the hat. It was rather funny.

After we went for another long walk along the beach and went home for a bite. After supper we went back to the cemetery to take some pictures (the sun had come out!) and document the stones by chalking the ones you could hardly read. We called it a night and Dave was happy I didn't want to go to the dance at 10 pm so we just watched a movie.
