Saturday 8/6/11 Who Dat who Say Who Dat When I Say Who Dat?
Last night was exciting indeed; the radio started crackling about 10:30 last night with Sgt Jarhead reporting to the duty ranger that a camper in his loop came to him and said a snake was in his tent. The duty ranger asked Ol’ Jarhead to describe the snake and Sarge said it was about 2’ long and looked to be brown and multicolored. The ranger told him that he was going to get his tongs and a net and would meet him at the campsite. 10 minutes later the ranger called the NRP (natural resource police officer that was in the park) and told him he caught a copperhead in the tent and was going to release it down by the sewer plant. One place you will never see me at Greenbrier is at the sewer plant! It wasn’t long after that call when we heard a scream coming from one our campsites so I went out to have a look around. I then heard the NRP officer radio the ranger on duty that he caught some campers on D28 (our loop) drinking Captain Morgan and an expensive tequila. Evidently the NRP officer was walking our loop last night and hide in the shadows near these campers tent and when he saw them drinking, he stepped out of the shadows and asked them if they had alcohol and this evidently solicited a scream of surprise from one of the girls. Who dat? So, we had an exciting late night on Friday. It’s needless for me to say that I now see copperheads everywhere I go and even dream about the damn things. Did I ever mention how much I detest being in Nature? I have never seen a snake in an Irish pub and I don’t why we can’t frequent pubs more often rather than sleeping in the woods with danger lurking around every tree and under every leaf. But no, I have to marry Miss Let’s Go Camping and Take Pictures of Waterfalls and Hike when I thought I was marrying Miss Shy and Retiring and Let’s Stay Home and Watch TV. Talk about truth in advertising; I claim victimization of a bait and switch scheme by Anita and her mother!!! Today was mostly rain and I think that kept the camper census down since we have only 8 brave families in our loop so Sunday should be and easy cleanup day but it is supposed to rain tomorrow too. Tina, one of the camp hostettes in the Ash loop dropped off the ice cream and popcorn money with Anita this afternoon since she is moving and won’t be at the ice cream social or the movie tonight. Considering the low camper census today, we had a pretty good turn out at both events. I guess the parents were at their wits end putting up with their little beastly darlings inside of wet tents all day and needed a break so they palmed them off on us unsuspecting VOLUNTEER camp hosts. All went well, though. Mr. and Mrs. Sgt Jarhead are leaving soon so Mary Jo is having a get riddance cookout for them on Monday and I, for one, will celebrate this august occasion. Don’t get me wrong, I think Sarge is a nice guy but the longer I’m around him the smarter I think Lassie is. We are still having fun and Anita is still trying to make a woodsman out of me- God bless her little heart for the effort but I think she would be more productive putting her effort elsewhere like buying me more books.
