Today's Alaska humor!

(Ron Writing) Yesterday was a nice quiet day. In the morning we attended worship service at the Eagle River Presbyterian Church. The regular pastor is on vacation but a pastor from Anchorage filled in and had a very good sermon. We also found the congregation to be very friendly and welcoming.

This morning we left Eagle River heading north on the Glenn Highway to Palmer where the highway turns mostly east and continues on toward Glennallen and Tok. We were expecting to make it to Glennallen but only made it half way. The drive heading east from Palmer was so beautiful that we kept stopping to enjoy the views and take some photos.

First we took a short loop road through some farm country east of Palmer. Then a little farther east the highway follows the Matanuska River valley with tall mountains on both sides. We drove past the mountains with beautiful colors, snow covered mountains with glaciers, and there was always the views of the river. There were many beautiful views of the very long and wide Matanuska Glacier which is the primary source of the Matanuska River.

About 5 PM we stopped at a small paved turnout with a very nice view and decided it would be a perfect place to relax, enjoy the views, and spend the night. If we were in a campground renting a site that had a view like this, we’d be paying over $40/night but this one is free. Not only that but it’s a “pull-through site”, we don’t need to unhook the trailer, we don’t have neighbors 6 feet on either side of us, and there are no rules about quiet hours etc. What a life, what a country – we feel blessed.

Weather: Overnight low was 53°. Cloudy with rain this morning, partial clearing this afternoon with periods of sun, highs in the low 60’s

Critters: A herd of Dall Sheep high on the mountain to the north of our campsite.

Mileage: Today - 99 miles, cumulative since leaving AZ on 4-6-11 – 8,147 miles.

Gasoline Price: $3.879/gal in Eagle River, AK

Tonight’s stop: We are spending the night at a scenic turnout about half way between Palmer and Glennallen, milepost 115.5 on Glenn HW, 61.82003, -147.44110
