In 170 miles we arrived at the Kewadin Casino Campground in Sault Sainte Marie, Michigan (US131, I-75). Sault Sainte Marie is in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan next to the Saint Marys River which flows between Lake Superior and Lake Huron. While we were in the area we:
>went to a park concert featuring the Petoskey Steel Drum Band. This is a 34 member high school band which includes about six percussionists, one electric guitarist, one base guitarist and the remaining members played steel drums. The band was started in 1997 and has always been self-supporting. They put on a great performance.
>took a 140 miles round trip drive to visit the Great Lakes Shipwreck Museum at Whitefish Point on Lake Superior. This area of Lake Superior is known as the “Graveyard of the Great Lakes”. Over 300 wrecks occurred in this part of the lake where it narrows down as it approaches Sault Sainte Marie. In the museum we learned that most of these wrecks were the result of one ship ramming another during bad weather. The museum includes a tour of the light keepers house and the life boat station.
>visited the Soo Locks Visitor Center and Soo Locks in Sault Sainte Marie. The locks provide transit between Lake Superior and Lake Huron, a 21 foot drop. There are four parallel locks on the US side which provide for different size ships. The largest lock is 1200 feet long and 110 feet wide.
>went to the Soo Theater to watch a performance of the Celtic duo Switchback. It was an excellent performance and we had great seats.
>toured the Museum Ship Valley Camp. This is an excellent museum which is located in a 700 foot freighter. Besides viewing numerous exhibits we got to tour the engine room, freight storage areas, pilot house and crew quarters.
>had lunch at a 4 star drive-in restaurant called Clyde’s Drive-In (1425 Riverside Drive, Sault Sainte Marie 906-632-2581). Great hamburgers and fish sandwiches.
