We left Nauvoo a little after 9:30 a.m. to head for Independence. Our GPS, "Matilda" kept trying to send us north and by some other route, so we cancelled her instructions and went the way we wanted to by of Hannibal, MO, and then across from there to Independence. It ended up being a much longer trip than we planned. We didn't arrive in Independence until 5:00 p.m.
Most of the delay was due to our decision to come the way we did. There were very long detours because of roads still being under water and closed because of the recent flooding, along with long waits for a pilot car for single direction trips because of partially flooded roadways. Some of the detours were poorly signed and we ended up having to hit the detour from two different directions.
We also stopped at Mark Twain's birthplace in Florida, Missouri. We went to the Mark Twain Memorial Museum which also houses the cabin that he was born in. The museum was very interesting and we enjoyed about a 1/2 hour film of his life. The memorial is next to a large lake named, appropriately enough, Mark Twain Lake. Unfortunately, the memorial is quite a few miles off of our chosen route and also off of any through routes, so that caused additional delays.
It was very hot well into the 100's. We saw temperature signs at 102 and 104 and those temperatures were not during the peak heat hours. The news tonight included a heat alert and indicated that the heat index would be between 105 and 110 now through Tuesday. I'm just happy that it isn't as humid as it was in Nauvoo.
We were too hot to cook since the motor home wasn't yet cooled down so we went out to a little Mexican restaurant.
We then came back and watched a little t.v. and now trying to get this journal caught up a little. It was also a pleasure to video chat with my brother, Kent, and get caught up on what is happening with him and Paula. The screen kept saying that the connection was too slow for video communications and that I should drop the video and just use the audio. But, I ignored it and it seemed to work fine.
We are supposed to have WIFI here but it is so weak that I have had to use my smart phone hot spot to do this and the Skype.
Well, I think this is all that I am going to do on this tonight. We will be going to Church in Independence in the morning and then try to see some of the historical sites in the area. We will be here through Monday night.
See 'ya tomorrow.
