We arrived in Katmia National Park after a flight on Pen Air to King Salmon and a 30 minute float plane ride to Brooks Lodge. After our briefing on appropriate bear ethic we checked in to our spacious cabin with our friends Sue and Allan. We spent the afternoon out on the platforms in the rain at the Brooks Falls watching brown bears trying to catch salmon. The salmon run was late this year and the bears were not having much luck. The rain was damping our bear watching experience and we headed back to our cabin. As we were leaving our cabin for dinner we discovered a mother bear with two yearling cubs’ right at the corner of our cabin. We had locked our cabin door and were franticly looking for a key to get back into the safety of our cabin. Luckily the bear head of down the trail to the beach and we headed to dinner packing quite an adrenalin rush. Lesson learned, look around before locking you self out of the cabin. We saw a mother bear with two year old cubs walk between the dining hall and a cabin as we eat dinner. After dinner we saw several bears waking on the lake shore and fishing in the lake. It is a very unique experience to be in such close proximity wit these large bears sharing their habitat. We learned today of the death in YNP gave us cause to reflect on our experiences.
