"Visitors are above average" :-)
Jul 20, 2011
Well – Tuesday was an excellent Day!
We stopped at the Trading Post Store before starting on the road and bought some nice moccasins and a birthday card for Michelle!
We stopped at a picnic spot by a lovely waterfall for lunch on the Serpent River… Walked and ate and took a photo for y’all.
Had an easy pass through Canada (a little hesitation over our temporary plate “Did you make that?” - then a nice chat).
Drove to Hiawatha National Forest , Bay Furnace Campground – right on the southern shore of Lake Superior. It was lovely! Packet of Cheese fondue with rustica rolls and fresh veggies for supper – gourmet camping - and thanks to Judy Conway and her family, we had great mosquito wipes, a pretty tablecloth and s’mores for dessert! What could be better???
Of course Judy Gray’s law was not to be avoided and we woke up to vigorous thunder showers.
Since weather .com said they were staying there on the lake for the day we decided not to stay another night – but to pack ourselves up and get into our nice safe auto! Packed up the tent partially wet, but everything else mostly dry.
We drove into sunshine and had an interesting drive.
Lunch from a Deli in Ewen Michigan – “Pasties” a local favorite - meat, potato and vegetable (rutabaga and carrots at least). When we returned to the car, we were lucky to find the nail in our rear tire. We stopped about 4 miles down the road at a tire place and had it repaired while we ate our lunch under a neighbor’s tree.
For several days now we've been reading letters from church friends... "it makes my heart ache AND fill with appreciation (N.S.)"It is revealing and very satisfying to hear what people have valued about our ministry - feedback one seldom gets at the time! (J.W.)"
Drove on and on and stopped for a picnic supper in Freeport Minnesota – a great little town on the Lake Wobegon Trail – what looks like a rail trail beautifully landscaped, with picnic tables and free bikes to borrow by the trail. The Trail Guide Sign Board states “Lake Wobegon Regional Trail: Where all the visitors are above average. Stearns County, Minnesota.” Thanked the lady rolling a water barrel down the street watering all the potted plants with the help of her young son. She had a great smile and a wave!
Now off to see where we can find a simple motel that will take us and our dogs.
