The Pickle Barrel, home turned museum of author William Donehey
We hated to leave Mackinaw City and our beautiful campground, but we hitched up and headed over the Mackinac Bridge, leaving lower Michigan and heading on into the Upper Peninsula (U.P.). We paid our $7 toll and traveled along Lake Michigan for a little while longer. This bridge was built in 1957 and was once the longest cable-stay bridge. We left Lake Michigan for good and saw Lake Superior for the 1st time at Grand Marais. We found another great campground right on Lake Superior where Bonnie can run off-leash, in and out of the rocky-shored lake. We’ve had really good luck lately!
We saw lots of waterfalls and interesting rock formations. Miner’s Castle is probably the most recognizable photo of Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore. We had to turn on the heater b/c the temperature dipped down to 50 degrees while we were here! On Thursday the temp near the lake never rose above 60 degrees.
There was a Grand Marais local named William Donehey who wrote children’s books and created the “teenie weenie” characters. He lived in a house shaped like a pickle barrel, which is now a museum.
