We had a fab breakfast, packed the car and started our drive. The GPS told us of another road closure and we weren’t going to sit in traffic like yesterday so we found out about a car ferry that crossed Lake Constance and took you almost directly into Switzerland. We headed for that. It was brilliant, straight on, only a few euro and a great trip across the lake and there we were.

Stopped at a café for our last German meal and ate far too much again before driving the 5km into Switzerland.

Just as we passed the first off ramp inside Switzerland we realised we didn’t have our camera. For some reason Nicola had picked up a business card from the café we had been at for lunch and rang them to try and ask in English if they had it. Luckily they understood camera and said yes they did but they were closing in 10 minutes. Jonathan reversed up the motorway and a cop came up beside us. We had only been in Switzerland 5 minutes and already in trouble. Anyway we smiled politely and he let us on our way. Back to pick up the camera and then through the border control/toll again.

Arrived in Lake Lucerne and the kids had been waiting to get their Swiss army knives so it was off to buy them first. Nicola just had to have one too! Then it was a walk around Lake Lucerne and to the Weeping Lion. Such a beautiful place and just as we arrived at the Lion the thunder came so it sounded like the Lion was roaring. It started to bucket down so we decided to begin our journey to the accommodation which was one hour away. We rang them before leaving and they told us they were a restaurant and not a hotel. Now what? Well luckily Jonathan’s good friend Aline came to the rescue and instead we drove directly to Geneva to her amazing home – arriving just after 11.00pm.

We sat outside when we arrived, drank French wine and met her lovely family, partner and also another kiwi travelling around Europe – while the kids jumped on the trampoline and played – a normal thing to do at 11.30pm!
