Wandering Wights 2011 travel blog

I woke up at 5:44 just in time to turn my alarm off before it beeped. I watched the sharks, fish, and stingrays glide overhead while I waited for wake up call. After wake up at 6:20, we rolled up everything, put it away and changed into our day clothes. We had breakfast and then a way more extensive tour of the aquarium than the night before. I was right behind our guide and she was very funny. At the end of our tour, she said she was not looking forward to the meeting she had next. She said they were going to tell her all the things she couldn't do. Her thoughts about that were as follows,"I'm not dead, just pregnant."

We left the building and walked down to the beach. We weren't allowed to actually set foot on the beach, however. Once we got word that the bus was at the aquarium, we walked back. We drove for a long time and I took a nap. It was very refreshing. We rolled into the little town of Gin Gin near lunchtime. At the school we had lunch and listened to the man tell us about the school system and the distances kids come to get to school. He also told us about what the school had been able to get with the profits of hosting People to People lunches. After that, we drove more clicks and more hours into the night. We got to the croc farm in late evening. We sat down at the tables and had the soup course and soda. I had lemon squash, my new favorite soda. After we finished the soup, delicious croc chowder, we went outside and down a dirt road through a big saltwater croc enclosure. The bloke's safety speech was sooo inspiring.

"I am obligated to give you a safety talk. Anything on the other side of the fence belongs to the crocodiles, cameras, fingers, anything. That is my safety talk."

On this note we were walking along and a croc right next to the fence turns, jaws agape, and slams into the fence right next to me. I jumped back and walked in the middle from then on. Further down, we put the big flashlights to our foreheads and looked for the red eye gleam of the crocs. We saw several resting on the far side of the water. Then we went back to the building and had the main course. I had steak because the other choice was fish. After we finished, we went back out to see some huge saltwater crocs and their ladies. Apparently, the ladies protect the babies and the guys protect the ladies. Most of them had one lady because the girls get jealous and rip up each other. I learned that saltwater crocs need to drink freshwater and that they sometimes go to golf course water hazards to get that water. On the way back we saw the smaller more heavily armored freshwater crocs. We got back to the building and had cake for dessert. I had chocolate cake. XD

The guy who showed us around the croc farm brought out a small freshwater croc and I got someone to take a picture of me holding it. It was dry, not slimy at all, and I could feel it breathing in my hands. After we all had pictures taken of us holding the croc, everyone who wanted to anyway, we got on the bus again and drove to our hotel. We got in at about 10:30 and had showers. I got the big bed and the other three slept in the beds in the other room.
