The Grand Tour 2011 travel blog

We had terrific flights from PDX to Calgary & on to Heathrow. Small jet to Calgary, huge Boeing 777 to London. Air Canada is terrific - great food - free beer & wine, blankets, pillows, etc. We were a bit late, but landed at Heathrow, and, with our prepaid tickets got right on the express train to Paddington Station - @ 15 minutes. Then a short walk to our hotel. Small room, just like NYC, but fine for us. We rested briefly and then headed out for a walk through Kensington Gardens. Absolutely beautiful - great weather - amazing park, with lakes and woods, statues, memorials, totally tame squirrels, birds & waterfowl. We watched a man hand-feed a yellow tit (what we would call a chickadee) and also watched as a squirrel clambered up his pants leg to get the treats! There were mute swans, a heron, coots, mallards, and more. Lovely flower gardens and charming vistas. They have lawn chairs set out in several areas for people to lounge. Paddle boats & rowboats in the lake. Afterwards we walked to a local pub, The Mitre, that I had found on line & was recommended. We had a couple of beers and sandwiches, then walked through some quaint mews on our way back to the hotel, where we are now - to rest! We canceled our Indian food reservations for tonight. There are so many restaurants right by the hotel, we will rest & if we're hungry later we'll have our choice - from Italian to Malaysian! So far my tour-guiding/concierge services have been much appreciated by my lone client! Haven't been able to get internet on my iPod yet/also no photos to upload yet, either. But we are having a great time and we've only been here a few hours. London is wonderful - reminds me of NYC - only older!!!
