One word for today….. HOT. Even by Florida standards it was hot. The main reenactment today started at 3pm which means to get a good seat we got in line at 1:30pm. Temperature in the sun (no shade) was 115 according to my handy thermometer. We keep our hats on, Margaret bought a parasol, and we drank a lot of water.
The place was packed today. At 10am the roads to the parking fields were backed up at least 30 cars. By 2:00pm the backup was as far as you could see down the road both ways.
The battle today was Picket’s charge. The original charge had some 12,000 men involved. The reenactment had maybe 150. The small number made the charge a bit of a disappointment. Still they did their best with what they had. Seems the 150th anniversary of the first battle of Manassas (July 21, 1861) about 80 miles south of Gettysburg is drawing many reenactors from Gettysburg. The organizers are predicting some 13,000 reenactors with be taking part in Gettysburg’s 150th in 2013. They hope to be able to reenact the charge then with the same numbers as the original. Guest we’ll have to come back then.
