| On the way to Flores our group decided to spend a bit of extra money and take a private van so that we could take a detour to the ruins of Tikal. These are probably the most impressive ruins I have seen so far and are really quite large. It took about three hours to walk all of the way through them as there are so many and some of them take a while to get to the top. I also had the opportunity to see and hear quite a few different Howler monkeys which are really quite cool. These monkeys sound absolutely ferocious from a distance as their voices can really carry. Of course once you actually see one it's like seeing a little dog with a deep voice...not very scary at all. The neat thing about these monkeys is that they will always start making noise when it's going to start to rain, so the locals always know at least half an hour before when it's going to rain as these animals can sense the pressure drop much faster than humans can. I took quite a few pictures at the ruins at Tikal so that everyone could get an idea of what these Mayan ruins are like. Pictures can be found here. |
