Our first stop of the day was to see Mount Rushmore. It was really neat and huge! We took a short hike to get a closer view and toured the information center. It felt like a heat wave hit us today as the temperature reached 80! We could even wear shorts for the first time in over a week! After seeing Mount Rushmore we took a scenic drive through Custer State Park and along the Needles Highway. We did not expect it to be as fabulous as it was…lots of narrow, curvy roads with gorgeous views at every turn. We saw deer, pronghorns, bison and two more firsts– wild donkeys and a mama turkey with her 4 baby chicks! The donkeys were overly friendly, coming right up to us as soon as we stopped the Jeep to see what we had to munch on! They were craving attention too! We were almost done with our drive when it started raining. Not a problem for us – we can handle the rain, right? Well, then the hail started coming down! Yep, we were caught in a hail storm with no place to go. So what does Russell do? He puts the Jeep in 4 wheel drive and drives right off the road under some trees for protection! We still got some small dings on the hood of the Jeep, but it could have been a lot worse. The hail came down for about 20 minutes and when it was over, the ground was covered with little white pebbles. The temperature dropped 20 degrees in this short time! When we got back to the campground, it was really flooded with some campers completely surrounded by water! Our neighbors said the wind gusted at 60 mph and the hail tore a hole in their awning! Luckily we didn’t have anything wrong with our RV, but Saint wasn’t too happy about being left alone through all of that! He was very happy to see us!
