June 26, Sunday
Today is the big concert at Santa Maria Sopra Minerva Church. In the morning, however, we went with Sylvia for a tour of Ostia Antica, an excavated ancient Roman port town, now miles from the sea. It was never destroyed by volcanoes, and shows the many shops, occasional temples, theaters, and old tombs.
We then bussed back into town for a rehearsal with organ and string ensemble, and then back to the hotel to shower and change for the concert.
We came back to town and went to an upstairs restaurant in our formal clothes where we were served an antipasta, bruchetta, immediately. However, the main course was extremely slow in coming which made us all on edge since we had to be back at the church for another rehearsal and standing arrangements for the performance. We finally scarfed a bit down and took off for the church.
We had a full house for the concert, and it was a thrill to sing in this beautiful old church. One of the pieces, a rather modern Kyrie, was with full organ pulling out all the stops. Needless to say, it was again very hot, and we were eager to get out of our sweaty formal clothes. We got back very late (concert was at 9 pm) and needed to take another shower before turning in.
