Parts To Be Replaced

Wednesday morning we left Red Bluff, California for Seven Feathers RV Resort in Canyonville, Oregon, a distance of about 225 miles. We stopped at the Rest Area adjacent to the Weed Airport. We were there about 15 minutes and we started out again. About 2 miles north of the Rest Area we heard a loud band and we thought we had run over something on the highway although neither of us had seen anything on the roadway although Ross was looking at the mirrors and saw something fly across the highway. We stopped and both of us got out but saw nothing unusual. We got back on the road and we drove no more than a mile when Ross noticed the engine heat was climbing and as he pulled off the road and set the air brake the “Check Engine” light came on. This time Ross knew where to concentrate his attention and what he found was enough to tell him that we were going no further that day. What was found was the drive shaft that drives the engine cooling fan had separated at the slip joint. The way the fan is operated is as follows: A crankshaft pulley at the front of the engine turns a drive belt and the belt turns a electromagnetic clutch, which in turn turns a drive shaft, which turns a gear box that changes the rotation by 90 degrees and the output shaft turns the fan. At first we thought that only the driveshaft needed to be replaced but this morning the mechanic removed all the parts and found there was damage to every part and everything has to be replaced. At that point where we became stranded on the shoulder of I5 north the cell phone became our best friend. We will not bore you with all the details but between our two phones we must have spent an hour on the phones getting everything setup for the tow. We wound up being towed by a company out off Medford and they towed us to the Peterson Cat dealership in Medford which is a company that is on Tiffin’s approved list of service facilities for the Tiffin Powerglide Chassis. Ross called Tiffin Motorhomes from the roadside after calling Good Sam to arrange a tow. Tiffin’s people called back an hour or so later and without boring everyone with the details the Good Sam tow was cancelled and Tiffin arranged the tow to Medford to the Cat dealership because the Cat service center said they could work on the motorhome first thing today. The service center had sent an email to Tiffin with the list of parts that needed to be replaced around 1030 this morning. At 1230 in the afternoon they still had not received a reply as to what parts Tiffin was willing to replace. Impatient Ross told the service manager that he would call Bob Tiffin and see what dust he must stir. Ross had to leave a message for Bob Tiffin but 30 minutes Bob Tiffin called back and said all parts are being shipped overnight and should be here by 0930 tomorrow morning. If all goes well we should be on our way by mid-afternoon. The picture above shows all of the parts that are damaged and will replaced tomorrow.

By the way. Marge turns 39 for the umtenth time today
